Revising Settlers for Indigenous People?

A Tlingit friend of mine was offended by the idea of "Settlers of Catan", which kind of bummed me out because regardless of subject matter, it's a solid board game, my very favorite of all time. So I'm trying to come up with ideas for creating a version of Settlers that revolves around indigenous people rather than a colonial motif.

I am aware they made a "Hunters & Gatherers" version of Carcassonne and some elements were tweaked to fit the motif of pre-agricultural living but I'd like to keep as many of the elements the same as possible simply because I am not a game designer and it would be easier for me to construct a version of the game using a pre-existing model rather than reinvent the wheel. So, like say, settlements would become a fish camp/hunting grounds versus the cities which become the main village. Roads could be 'paths'. But what to do with the resource cards? Wood could be kept, for sure. Sheep could be turned into wild game like deer. To turn the tables a little, the bandit could become "the Explorer" or some invading western equivalent. ;)

Any ideas? For the most part I am stuck on the 5 resources and what would be used to make a road equivalent, settlement/city equivalent, etc. since the values of pre-agricultrual/industrial living are very different from those in Settlers now. :\ I'd ask my friend herself but this was to be a surprise.

I've been wondering about this for a while. When you're placing your first two settlements, what strategy do you favor? Do you go far as many varied resources as possible with frequent numbers on them or do you snag a 2:1 port and that resource? Which works better in general? I love the game, but admittedly I haven't won in a while. heh.

He recently got the seafarers expansion which I have only played once, but it seemed to lend itself to a 2 player game much easier.

1. Someone rolls a 7, or plays the Knight card.
2. The assailant chooses a person to rob.
3. The assailant and victim may choose to negotiate over which resource card the victim will yield, in return for the assailant placing the robber on a hex of the victim's choosing (typically a less productive one).
4. If both players agree, exchange is made. If no agreement can be met, the robbery occurs as usual.

Note that once a victim is chosen, the robber may not choose a different victim if no agreement can be made.

The advantages for both robber and victim are clear. The robber has a better chance of taking a more desirable resource. The victim, in return, has the opportunity to protect resources that s/he may want to save for his/her next turn, and mitigate the loss of production caused by the robber's presence.

Preferred is some ability to know your cards from turn to turn and therefor execute turns quickly and in turn get in three games not two per eve. We use the base set only to keep cards and costs simpler, but would entertain the notion of expansions if, as a group we can demonstrate sufficient capacity to process the extra cards and still keep it interesting (moving along).
- I hear this speeds up the initial game, and gives stragglers a chance to catch up with winners; less relevant in endgame, since by then most players have spread out enough to be getting a resource on most numbers, and the cost goes up.
There are, of course, sub-variations... whether you can hoard up a pile of tokens, or have to spend them whenever you have enough for a purchase; whether you can trade them; etc.
If you try it, post the results!

Just a thought... lets say we draw up a list of 6 civs. Each civ would have their own attributes that would affect how the game may be played for you.

eg I pick the romans, famed for their legions and use of roads. In the game I may start with an extra road and during the course of the game I can "break" roads by placing mine over roads of any other players.

I think this would be a fun way to add more spice into the game... imagine playing as one of the historical civs (Astec and ritual sacrifice - 3 sheep and 1 wood for divine intervention!) lol

I would love to hear of some potential civs to try it out.

So, has anyone else noticed the single-mindedness of people when playing seafarers to beeline it to the gold plot?

My brother was in a game where he let the other two players race to the gold, and he hung back and squandered what was left and ignored, and he won.

Then again, three player games tend to allow a little more room for expansion than 4 player games. 4 player games get crowded FAST, especially when people keep using up hexes by building settlments 3 vertices appart as opposed to only 2 vertices apart!

Welcome to the Catananites!

I hope this group will grow fairly rapidly. Please feel free to discuss strategies, set up challenges via WanCatan, Netset, the Java settlers site, or any other online Settlers clients. Hopefully, if this group grows large enough, we'll have enough people in a region to actually set up live games.

Please encourage any Catan settlers that you know to join. There is strength in numbers!
