I have been playing online Settlers for the last few weeks and the only limitation I see is that you need to sign up. To play in the ladder (rankings of players) you need to sign up on two sites. It is limited to the basic game and only 4 players are allowed.

It has only a couple very minor quirks, and you can customize the game to play to different points, on several different maps, and versus either computer or human opponents. This has all of them - seafarers, vanilla, as well as cities&knights.
