I think the only reason it worked is because we had NO ore coming in at all, so we were equally slowed down. It still felt rather hollow and not near as engaging as a normal game. Eventually I purchased Carcasssonne for days when we only have 2 players available. Very different in mechanics, of course, but as solid of a game as Settlers. It worked well enough, but required a lot more work, strategically. Trying to balance not playing against yourself and not helping out your 'other player' too much makes for an interesting game. I've seen a few suggestions on fan sites, but nothing has seemed all that workable.
