My sister and I played a 2-player game once, one color each, and played as 'normal'. I think the only reason it worked is because we had NO ore coming in at all, so we were equally slowed down. It still felt rather hollow and not near as engaging as a normal game.

Eventually I purchased Carcasssonne for days when we only have 2 players available. Very different in mechanics, of course, but as solid of a game as Settlers.

By the way, Mayfair now has English versions of the card game expansions. They sell all five in a single boxed set.

I like playing the basic card game. The expansion sets for the German editions are even more fun.

does anyone have a method of playing a two player game? my brother and I play the basic game, each with two 'players', we alternate turns, we can trade once within our own guys per turn, and we play to 15 points. this works out pretty well, but makes the strategy a little weirder since you have to try not to play against yourself. He recently got the seafarers expansion which I have only played once, but it seemed to lend itself to a 2 player game much easier.

so, any suggestions to get a more workable 2 player game going?

My girlfriend and I have tried to play a 2-player game, with similar results. It worked well enough, but required a lot more work, strategically. Trying to balance not playing against yourself and not helping out your 'other player' too much makes for an interesting game.

I've seen a few suggestions on fan sites, but nothing has seemed all that workable.

Another way: just use one color per player, start with 3 settlements and three roads each. It works ok.

Get the Settlers Card Game. It is designed for 2 players, has all the fun elements of the regular Settlers game, and it has some fun development cards that aren't included in the regular game.

The German version has several expansion variants that are even more fun to play. Mayfair Games now carries these:

I think the card game is okay...tends to slow down a bit towards the end of the game...especially if you use the card game expansion.
