I happen to prefer the original Kosmos imports of the game over the English versions. The hexes and cards are much more brilliantly colored and easy to spot. The pieces are all wooden. The cards and instructions are in Deutsch, of course, but if you buy them through Mayfair Games (www.mayfairgames.com), they include English translations.
Anyone else into the import versions?

Thu, November 6, 2003 - 9:23 AMAgreed. The original is a model of clarity and appearance. The recent plastic edition is not bad, but is a little too cluttered.
But does anyone else have one of the Essen hand painted Robber figures sculpted by Teuber :)
Moo,

Mon, November 24, 2003 - 11:53 AMSeveral years ago a German friend of mine brought me a copy of Die Siedler as a gift when he stayed with me. I've since played the English version, but I much prefer the original.
The coolest one I've ever seen is called Whisky Settlers. It's the same game, but you're building distilleries and if I remember correctly, the robber is a bottle of scotch. -

Mon, November 24, 2003 - 12:05 PMI could imagine it becoming a drinking game, where the person who is being robbed is required to drink... -

Re: Die Siedler von Catan
Mon, November 24, 2003 - 4:33 PMyeek! what a fun variation! I'd like to see someone pin down rules for a settlers drinking game. I'd print them out and try them at least once!
my set isn't Die Siedler, but it's made with simple wooden tolkens... no plastic. I much prefer any game with wooden tokens for some reason.

Re: Die Siedler von Catan
Tue, November 25, 2003 - 10:31 PMwe've played settlers as a drinking game before... also there were fun rules... like, whenever someone initiated a trade with wood, they'd have to share a sexual fantasy... stuff like that.
